Argument writing in Grade 6
Grade 6 marks the shift from opinion to argument: the writer states a defensible claim — one a reasonable person could dispute — and supports it with relevant evidence and explicit reasoning, organised logically and written in a formal style with a concluding statement. The key new demand is reasoning that makes the relationship between the evidence and the claim clear, with sentences such as “This demonstrates…” or “which supports the claim because…”
The central mistake is treating an argument like an opinion piece — writing “I like” or “I think” — or stacking up evidence with no reasoning to connect it to the claim. Evidence without explanation does not argue; it just lists. Revision tip: have the writer check that the claim could genuinely be challenged, then add a reasoning sentence after each piece of evidence showing why it supports the claim, and keep the tone formal rather than personal throughout.
