Change-unknown word problems describe a starting amount and a known result, then ask for the hidden amount that was added or taken away in between. Learners read the story, see that the change is the missing part, and work out whether to add or subtract to find it. This is important because it moves beyond simple totals and teaches children that the unknown in a story is not always the final answer.

For example, a story might say Sam had 5 marbles, found some more, and then had 9. To find how many he found, the child reasons 9 − 5 = 4 marbles. A common mistake is to add the two given numbers, writing 5 + 9, because both numbers appear in the problem. A helpful tip is to picture a start, a change, and an end, mark which part is unknown, and remember that finding a missing change between a smaller start and a larger end means subtracting.
