Reading a box-and-whisker plot asks learners in Grades 6 and 7 to pull the five-number summary — minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and maximum — from a diagram, and to read off spread measures such as range and interquartile range. The box shows the middle half of the data, the line inside it marks the median, and the whiskers reach to the extremes.

For example, if the whiskers end at 4 and 22 and the box runs from 9 to 17 with a line at 13, then the minimum is 4, maximum is 22, median is 13, range is 22 − 4 = 18 and the interquartile range is 17 − 9 = 8. A common mistake is reading the box edges as the smallest and largest values instead of the whisker ends. Tip: trace the whole plot left to right — whisker end, box edge, median line, box edge, whisker end — and match each landmark to its name before answering.
