Understanding more or less
Comparing numbers means deciding which of two values is greater, which is smaller, or whether they are equal, and recording the result with the symbols >, < or =. These worksheets ask the learner to compare quantities of objects or written numbers, building the ordering sense needed for place value, estimation and number lines.
For example, to compare 47 and 52, look at the tens first: 4 tens is less than 5 tens, so 47 < 52, no matter what the ones digits are. The symbol opens toward the larger number. A common mistake is choosing the number with more or larger-looking ones digits, saying 47 > 52 because 7 is bigger than 2. Tip: always compare the highest place value first and only move to the next place when those digits are equal.
