Word problems in Grade 1
Word problems turn arithmetic into real situations, which is exactly where first graders need practice. The maths is easy — adding and subtracting within 20 — but the thinking is new: reading a short story, spotting the numbers, and deciding whether to add or subtract. Words like “more”, “altogether” and “in all” usually mean add; “left”, “take away” and “gives away” usually mean subtract.
Mia has 6 apples. Mia gets 3 more. How many apples does Mia have now?
- Find the numbers: Mia starts with 6 and gets 3 more.
- Decide add or subtract: “gets more” means put together — add.
- Solve: 6 + 3 = 9 apples.
How to use these worksheets
- Read each problem aloud together, twice if needed.
- Underline the two numbers and circle the action word.
- Write the number sentence, then the answer.
- Tick Show answers to check, then download the PDF and print.
