Addition in Grade 1
First grade stretches addition from small sums up to 20, and introduces smart strategies instead of just counting on fingers. The most important is making a ten: children learn that any pair can be rearranged to reach a friendly ten first. This builds real number sense and sets up the two-digit addition that comes in Grade 2.

- Make a ten: 8 needs 2 more to reach 10, so split the 5 into 2 and 3.
- Get to ten: 8 + 2 = 10.
- Add what’s left: 10 + 3 = 13.
