Subtraction in Grade 1
First graders learn that subtraction is “taking away” or finding the difference, working within 20. Two ideas matter most: counting back from the larger number, and seeing that subtraction is the opposite of addition (if 9 + 4 = 13, then 13 − 4 = 9). These worksheets give plenty of practice with both.
13 − 4 = ?
- Start at 13 and count back four: 12, 11, 10, 9.
- Or use a ten: 13 − 3 = 10, then 10 − 1 = 9.
- Answer: 9.
