Why counting patterns matter
Skip counting is quiet preparation for multiplication. A child who can count 2, 4, 6, 8… is already halfway to the 2× table; 5, 10, 15, 20… is the 5× table. Number patterns also build the habit of looking for structure — noticing “it goes up by the same amount each time” — which is exactly the thinking good math depends on.

- Find the step: 12 − 6 = 6, and 18 − 12 = 6. It goes up by 6 each time.
- Add the step to the last number: 18 + 6 = 24.
- Answer: 24.
