Fractions in Grade 2
Second grade is where fractions begin — usually as “equal parts of a whole,” like halves, thirds and quarters. A natural next step is adding fractions that share the same bottom number (the denominator). Because the pieces are the same size, you simply count how many you have: add the numerators (top numbers) and keep the denominator.
2/5 + 1/5 = ?
- Same denominator? Yes — both are fifths, so the pieces are equal.
- Add the top numbers: 2 + 1 = 3.
- Keep the bottom number: still fifths.
- Answer: 3/5.
