Division in Grade 2
Division is “sharing equally” — splitting a group into equal parts. In second grade it stays gentle: simple facts that come straight from the times tables, with answers that come out even. If a child knows that 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 is just the same fact turned around. That link between multiplication and division is the single most useful idea here.
15 ÷ 3 = ?
- Ask a times question: “3 times what equals 15?”
- Recall the table: 3 × 5 = 15.
- So the answer is 5. You’ve shared 15 into 3 equal groups of 5.
