What Grade 2 addition covers
In second grade, children move from adding small numbers to fluently adding within 100. By the end of the year most students can add two-digit numbers, understand place value (tens and ones), and “carry” a ten when a column adds up to more than nine. These worksheets grow with them: start with sums to 20, then work up to two-digit problems.
47 + 38 = ?
- Add the ones: 7 + 8 = 15. That’s more than 9, so keep the 5 and carry the 1 ten.
- Add the tens: 4 + 3 = 7, plus the 1 you carried = 8.
- Answer: 8 tens and 5 ones = 85.
Adding with regrouping (carrying)
“Regrouping” just means trading ten ones for one ten. Once the “carry the ten” step clicks, the rest is just practice — which is exactly what the generator above is for. Every sheet is new, so a child can practise the same skill as many times as they need without seeing the same problems twice.
