Mental subtraction asks students to take away friendly multiples of ten and one hundred without reaching for a written algorithm. By counting back in tens, or by subtracting a round number and adjusting, learners keep the calculation in working memory and stay flexible. This skill supports making change, checking differences, and judging whether a written answer is reasonable before trusting it.

To work out 83 − 30, hold 83 and step back three tens: 83 → 73 → 63 → 53. For 72 − 9, subtract 10 to get 62, then add 1 back because you took away one too many, giving 63. A frequent error is subtracting to a round number and forgetting to adjust, so 72 − 9 is left as 62. Tip: when a number ends in 8 or 9, round it up, subtract, then add the little bit back.
