Understanding naming picture fractions

Naming picture fractions is usually a learner’s first encounter with fraction notation. A shape such as a circle or bar is divided into equal parts, some of which are shaded, and the child writes the fraction the picture shows. The top number counts the shaded parts and the bottom number counts the equal parts in the whole. At Grade 1 and 2 this links the words “one half” or “three quarters” to a symbol, building the idea that a fraction describes part of one whole split into equal pieces.

For example, if a rectangle is cut into four equal parts and three are shaded, the fraction is ¾: three shaded parts out of four equal parts. A common mistake is counting only the unshaded parts, or writing 3/7 when the picture has three shaded and four unshaded pieces — the bottom number must be the total parts, not the leftover ones. A useful tip is to check that every part is the same size before naming the fraction, because unequal parts cannot be described by a simple fraction.
