Understanding ordinal numbers
Ordinal numbers tell learners in Grades 1 and 2 the position of something in an order — first, second, third — rather than how many there are. The skill is matching an ordinal word to its position number and back again, so children can describe where an item sits in a line, a race, or a list. This separates the idea of order (which one) from quantity (how many), a distinction young children often blur.
For example, the fifth child in a line is in position 5, so the ordinal word for 5 is “fifth”; working the other way, “ninth” names position 9. A common mistake is mixing up ordinals with counts — saying there are “five” when asked who came “fifth.” Tip: count the positions aloud, pointing as you go — first, second, third — and the ordinal word always lands on the same number as the count you reach.
