Sides and vertices practice has learners in kindergarten through Grade 3 count the straight edges (sides) and the corners (vertices) of a polygon. A side is one straight line segment on the boundary; a vertex is the point where two sides meet. Carefully counting both numbers trains children to examine a shape part by part instead of recognising it as a whole, and it prepares them to sort and name polygons later.

For example, a pentagon has 5 straight sides and 5 vertices, while a hexagon has 6 of each; in any simple polygon the number of sides always equals the number of vertices. A common mistake is double-counting a corner or skipping the side you started on, so the totals come out wrong.
