Comparing numbers in Grade 3
In Grade 3, children compare three-digit numbers up to 1,000. The key is place value: compare the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones, and stop as soon as the digits differ. Choosing greater than (>), less than (<) or equal to (=) becomes quick and automatic with practice.
406 ▢ 399
- Compare the hundreds: 4 hundreds is more than 3 hundreds.
- So 406 is greater — you don’t even need to check the rest.
- Answer: 406 > 399.
How to use these worksheets
- Compare from the left: hundreds, then tens, then ones.
- Stop at the first place where the digits differ.
- Keep the answer key (page 2) for quick checking.
