Fractions in Grade 3

Third grade is a big year for fractions: children learn to see a fraction as a number on the number line, to recognise equivalent fractions (like 1/2 = 2/4), and to add fractions that share a denominator. Adding same-denominator fractions is the natural first step — count the equal pieces by adding the top numbers.

3/8 + 2/8 = ?

  1. Same denominator? Yes — both are eighths, so the pieces match.
  2. Add the numerators: 3 + 2 = 5.
  3. Keep the denominator: still eighths → 5/8.
