Subtraction in Grade 3
Third-grade subtraction reaches 1,000 and includes the trickiest case: borrowing across a zero. Children learn to regroup carefully, place by place, and to check their answer by adding it back. These worksheets build from two-digit review up to full three-digit borrowing.
402 − 137 = ?
- Ones: 2 − 7 won’t work. Borrow, but the tens are 0, so borrow from the hundreds first.
- Regroup: 4 hundreds become 3; a ten appears, then that ten gives ones: 12 − 7 = 5.
- Tens: 9 − 3 = 6. Hundreds: 3 − 1 = 2.
- Answer: 265.
