Fractions in Grade 5
Fifth grade is where fractions get real: adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. The method is to find a common denominator, rewrite each fraction, then add the numerators and simplify. It’s the most important fraction skill of elementary school. These worksheets generate unlike-denominator problems and give the simplified answer.
1/2 + 1/3 = ?
- Find a common denominator: for halves and thirds it is 6.
- Rewrite: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6.
- Add: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
