Area of a trapezoid asks learners in Grades 6 and 7 to find the space inside a four-sided figure with one pair of parallel sides. Because the two parallel sides differ in length, you average them and multiply by the perpendicular height: A = ½(a + b)h. This generalises the rectangle and triangle area rules to a shape that sits between them.

For example, parallel sides of 6 cm and 10 cm with a height of 4 cm give A = ½(6 + 10) × 4 = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm². A common mistake is multiplying the two parallel sides together, or forgetting to halve the sum. Tip: add the two parallel sides first, take half of that total to get their average, then multiply by the height — and make sure the height is the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides, not a slanted side.
