Understanding two-step equations
Two-step equations of the form ax + b = c are solved by undoing the operations in reverse order: first remove the constant that is added or subtracted, then divide away the coefficient of the variable. Each step is applied to both sides to keep the equation balanced. This is the natural extension of one-step solving toward fuller algebra.
To solve 3x + 4 = 19, subtract 4 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5. A common mistake is dividing before subtracting, dividing the whole left side by 3 too early and mishandling the 4. Tip: peel the equation like an onion, undo addition or subtraction first, then division, and substitute your answer back into 3x + 4 to confirm it gives 19.
