Understanding rational number operations
Rational number operations cover adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers that can be written as fractions, including positive and negative values. In Grades 6 and 7 learners combine signed fractions and decimals, applying sign rules alongside the usual fraction and decimal methods. This brings together earlier work so students can compute with any rational number.
For example, −½ + ¾ = ¼, found by writing both over 4 to get −&frac24; + ¾. A common mistake is to mishandle the sign while finding the common denominator, or to forget that a negative times a negative is positive. A helpful tip is to settle the sign of the answer first using the rules for signs, then carry out the fraction or decimal arithmetic as usual, which keeps the two separate decisions from interfering with each other.
