The distributive property asks learners in Grades 6 and 7 to expand an expression such as a(x + b) by multiplying the outside factor by each term inside the brackets. The rule a(x + b) = ax + ab lets a product of a number and a sum be rewritten as a sum of products, which is the key to simplifying and later to combining like terms and solving equations.

For example, 3(x + 4) expands to 3 × x + 3 × 4 = 3x + 12; with subtraction, 5(x − 2) = 5x − 10. A common mistake is multiplying only the first term and forgetting the second, writing 3(x + 4) as 3x + 4. Tip: draw arrows from the outside number to both terms inside the brackets, multiply along each arrow, and keep the sign (plus or minus) that was between the terms.
