Understanding better buy: compare unit prices

Better-buy problems ask learners in Grades 6 and 7 to compare two offers and decide which gives more for the money by finding and comparing unit prices. Because the packages hold different amounts at different prices, you cannot compare the sticker prices directly; you divide price by quantity to find the cost of a single item, then pick the lower one. This is everyday proportional reasoning.

For example, 4 items for $1.00 costs 25¢ each, while 6 items for $1.80 costs 30¢ each, so the first offer (Option A) is the better buy. A common mistake is choosing the option with the lower total price, even though it also contains fewer items. Tip: divide the price by the number of items for each offer to get the cost per item, then compare those two unit prices — the smaller cost per item is the better buy, regardless of total price.
