Understanding combine like terms
Combining like terms simplifies an expression by collecting terms that share the same variable part. Students add or subtract the coefficients of like terms while keeping the variable the same, and they leave unlike terms separate. This tidies expressions into their simplest form and is a routine first step before solving many equations.
For 5x + 3 + 2x − 1, group the x terms, 5x + 2x = 7x, and the constants, 3 − 1 = 2, giving 7x + 2. A common mistake is combining unlike terms, such as adding 5x and 3 to get 8x, or merging x and x2 terms. Tip: identify the variable part of each term, only combine terms whose variable parts match exactly, and keep the sign in front of each term with it as you gather them.
