Understanding two-way frequency tables

A two-way frequency table organises data by two categories at once, with one category across the rows and the other across the columns. Reading one means finding joint frequencies (a single cell), marginal frequencies (a row or column total), and the grand total. These worksheets build the skill of extracting counts from cross-classified data.

For example, if a table of students shows 8 who walk and like sport, that cell is a joint frequency; the row total for "walk" of 20 is a marginal frequency. A common mistake is reading a row total when the question asks for a single cell, or vice versa. Tip: a joint frequency sits where one specific row meets one specific column, while a marginal frequency is the total at the end of a row or column, so match the question to a cell or a margin before reading.
