Understanding find a missing side with the pythagorean theorem
The Pythagorean theorem asks learners in Grade 8 to find a missing side of a right triangle using a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) and a and b are the legs. To find the hypotenuse you add the squares of the legs and take the square root; to find a leg you subtract the known squares before taking the root.
For example, legs of 6 cm and 8 cm give a hypotenuse of √(36 + 64) = √100 = 10 cm; with a hypotenuse of 13 and one leg of 5, the other leg is √(169 − 25) = √144 = 12. A common mistake is adding the squares when solving for a leg instead of subtracting. Tip: identify the hypotenuse first — it is always the longest side — then add the squares to find it, or subtract to find a shorter leg.
