Understanding negative and zero exponents

Negative and zero exponents ask learners in Grade 8 to evaluate powers whose exponent is zero or negative. Any non-zero base raised to the power 0 equals 1, and a negative exponent means the reciprocal of the positive power: b to the −n equals 1 over b to the n. These rules extend the pattern of exponents consistently below the first power.

For example, 70 = 1, and 2−3 = 1 / 23 = 1/8. A common mistake is thinking a zero exponent gives 0, or that a negative exponent makes the answer negative — it makes a fraction, not a negative number. Tip: read a zero exponent as “always 1” (for any non-zero base), and read a negative exponent as a signal to flip the base into a fraction and make the exponent positive before evaluating.
