Understanding linear functions
A linear function describes a straight-line relationship in which a constant rate of change links the input and output, usually written y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. These worksheets ask the learner to evaluate, graph or interpret linear functions, a cornerstone of algebra and modelling real situations.
For example, in y = 2x + 3 the line rises 2 for every 1 across and crosses the y-axis at 3, so when x = 4, y = 2(4) + 3 = 11. A common mistake is swapping the slope and intercept, or adding before multiplying when evaluating. Tip: read m as the steepness (change in y per unit x) and b as the starting value where x = 0, and follow the order of operations by multiplying mx before adding b.
Sample linear functions questions
These examples come from the Easy setting. Generate a worksheet for a complete page with space for working.
- For y = 3x + 4, find y when x = 0.
- For y = 4x + 1, find y when x = 1.
- For y = 4x + 0, find y when x = 1.
- For y = 2x + 1, find y when x = 0.
Check the sample answers
- y = 4
- y = 5
- y = 4
- y = 1
Practice focus
Replace x with the supplied number, multiply by the coefficient, and add the constant. Keep track of negative signs and label the resulting output y.
