Understanding volume of cones
Volume of cones (Grade 8) asks learners to find the space inside a cone using one third of π × radius² × height, that is V = ⅓πr²h. A cone holds exactly one third as much as a cylinder with the same base and height, which is why the one-third factor appears. The height must be the perpendicular height from the base to the apex, not the slant height.
For example, a cone with radius 3 cm and height 9 cm has volume ⅓ × 3.14 × 3² × 9 = ⅓ × 3.14 × 9 × 9 ≈ 84.8 cm³. A common mistake is dropping the one-third factor (giving the cylinder’s volume) or using the slant height. Tip: compute πr²h as if it were a cylinder, then take one third of that result, and make sure the height used is the perpendicular height.
