Understanding addition on number lines
Adding on a number line turns addition into a forward jump. Learners start at the first number and move right by the size of the second number, landing on the sum. The number line makes counting on concrete and shows addition as movement along a sequence, which supports later work with larger numbers, negative numbers, and measurement scales.
To add 5 + 3, place a finger on 5 and jump forward three spaces: 6, 7, 8, landing on 8. Making one big labelled jump of 3, or three small jumps of 1, both work as long as you count the spaces, not the starting dot. A common mistake is counting the number you start on as the first jump, so 5 + 3 lands on 7. Tip: say the start number silently, then count only the spaces you move across.
