Understanding sorting by colour, shape and size
Sorting by an attribute means grouping objects that share one visible feature, such as colour, shape, or size, and being able to state the rule used. In pre-kindergarten through Grade 1, children put items into groups and explain, for instance, “these are all red.” Sorting builds the habit of noticing properties and giving reasons, an early step toward classifying data and organising information.
For example, given red circles and blue circles, a child can sort by colour into two groups, or sort the same items by size if some circles are large and some small. A common mistake is switching the rule partway, mixing a red group with a small group so the sort no longer follows one clear feature. A helpful tip is to name the single attribute out loud before starting — “I am sorting by colour” — and check every item against only that one rule.
