Understanding repeating object patterns
A repeating pattern is a unit of shapes or objects that repeats over and over, such as circle, square, circle, square. In pre-kindergarten through Grade 1, children recognise the repeating unit and continue the pattern or fill a gap in it. Finding the unit that repeats is early algebraic thinking and feeds directly into number patterns and skip counting.
For example, in circle, triangle, circle, triangle, __, the repeating unit is circle-triangle, so the next object is a circle. A common mistake is to copy the most recent object rather than following the unit, placing a triangle because it came last. A useful tip is to draw a loop around the part that repeats first; once the unit is marked, the child simply reads it again from the start to know what comes next.
