Understanding ordinal positions
Ordinal positions tell where something sits in a line or order, using words such as first, second, third, and so on. In kindergarten and Grade 1 children match these words to places in a row of pictures, for example finding the fourth animal from the left. Order words appear in everyday life — finishing places in a race, floors of a building, steps in a recipe — so being fluent with them helps a child follow and give directions.
For example, given a row of five shapes, a worksheet might ask a child to colour the third shape; the answer is the one with two shapes before it. A common mistake is confusing position words with counting words, such as reading “third” as “three shapes” and colouring three of them. A good tip is to tap each item while saying “first, second, third,” then stop and colour only the single item you land on.
