Understanding ordering objects by size

Ordering objects by size asks children to take three pictured objects and arrange them from shortest to tallest. Learners compare the objects in pairs, find the shortest one first, then the next, then the tallest, and record the order. This extends simple two-object comparison into ordering a small set, which develops the reasoning that if one object is shorter than a second and the second is shorter than a third, the first must also be the shortest of all.

For example, given a candle, a bottle and a lamp, a child might find the candle shortest, the bottle in the middle, and the lamp tallest. A common mistake is to compare only two of the three objects and forget to place the third correctly. A helpful tip is to line all three up against the same bottom line, then point to the shortest and remove it in your mind, repeating until every object has a place in the order.
