Understanding shape patterns
Shape patterns repeat a unit of shapes in a set rule, such as AB, AAB, or ABC, and children continue the pattern by repeating that unit. In kindergarten, learners identify the repeating core and extend it or fill a missing shape. Working with letter-named patterns builds the structural thinking that later supports number sequences and functions.
For example, an ABC pattern of circle, square, triangle, circle, square, __ continues with a triangle, since the unit circle-square-triangle repeats. A common mistake is to repeat only the last shape seen rather than following the whole unit, or to misread an AAB pattern as AB. A helpful tip is to label each shape with its letter — A, B, C — find where the letters start over, and use that repeating block to read off the next shape in the sequence.
