Understanding full, empty and capacity
Full, empty and capacity asks children to compare how much different containers hold using the words full, empty, more and less. Learners look at pictured jars, cups or bottles, judge how much liquid each one holds, and decide which container holds more. This introduces capacity as the amount a container can hold, separate from its height or shape, and it gives children the everyday language they need to describe filling and pouring.
For example, a worksheet might show a wide bowl filled to the top beside a tall thin glass filled halfway. Even though the glass is taller, the full bowl holds more. A common mistake is to assume the taller container always holds more, ignoring how wide it is or how high the liquid reaches. A helpful tip is to imagine pouring one container into the other: the one that would overflow the other is the one that holds more.
